I would like to learn about wood turning – I am a complete novice! Any advice on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated
Hi Katy,
Where are you based? – The best advice I can give is join a club or visit your local turning supply shop.
Phil
Great website, really enjoyed my visit. Really good inspiration and resource for a novice like myself. Congratulations to your club on reaching a marvellous milestone. Thank you. Cambridgeshire, so too far to travel for your meetings. A
Hello. I enjoyed Woodturning at school and would very much like to get into it again. Please can you tell me of there are any courses or workshops in the Southampton area?
Hi Laura,
sorry for the delayed response. we are your nearest club in the Southampton area. Our club runs training – we don’t have the next one planned, but I’m sure it is in the works. Our members also do informal training. If you are looking for a formal course/teaching. We can highly recommend Les Thorne – http://www.noturningback.co.uk/ntbk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4&Itemid=56
we meet the first Monday of the month and our new members team will be happy to talk through our clubs options – https://hants-woodturners-hwa.co.uk/about-us/
Hi, I’m looking to take up turning as it has always interested me. I live in hook, north hampshire and wondered if anyone knew of any groups near me, also does anyone know of any cheap secondhand lathes for sale?
Many thanks,
James
Hi James,
The following website has all the locations of official clubs in the UK – https://www.awgb.co.uk/club-map/
Looks like the Surrey assoc woodturners is the closest to Hook.
Our trading post page has an up-to-date list of lathes, tools we have on sale – https://hants-woodturners-hwa.co.uk/trading-post/
Best advice is to go to a club, try out/practice on a club lathe before you buy.
Hi, I’m just making a general enquiry. I do general gardening and landscaping work and occasionally come across some nice wood. Do you guys ever buy or take wood from the public? I’ve just been cutting up a very large cherry on one of customers properties and though it’s be a shame to see it go to waste.
Regards, Pete.
Hi Pete, yes we accept donations and can also buy. Best is to write to our chairman, with photos and location and that will be distributed out to the club members.
Hi there I’m sending a email for some info for my grandfather and hopeing you could point me in the right direction he’s was a self taught wood turner for many decades but had to sell his lathe due to down sizeing and was curious if there is a location he could pay to use a lathe like a workshop or something where he could do a few bits to keep busy not a big people person but will grow on people thank you for your help
Hi Sam,
There are options for your grandfather, you can try the following link to the shed charity: https://menssheds.org.uk/find-a-shed/
Also you can come along to our club and depending on location – I’m sure there will be people willing to let him have a play. We have open evenings as well where anybody can have ago. Best bet is to come along and speak to one of our committee to understand and I’m sure we can help.
