Applications are invited for the Cockpit Arts Award 2011 which aims to help an aspiring or established turner i.e. someone who practices the art and craft of turning on a lathe in
wood or other materials, by providing the space and time to grow their business, increase
their profitability and develop their profile. We will therefore be looking for an individual
who demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit as well as creative excellence and craft skills.

This Award will include an equipped studio and includes the following benefits:

•    Studio space and a lathe and workbench for a year within the creative community of Cockpit Arts at Deptford, London SE8 with access to office facilities and resource centre.

•     Business and professional development services including on-site; coaching, a personalised development plan, access to finance, workshops and events.

•     A range of selling and promotional opportunities including Cockpit Arts Open Studios events.
Cockpit Arts is a social enterprise and the UK’s only creative-business incubator for designer-makers. We are a renowned hotbed of creative talent, focused on nurturing and supporting talented designers and artisans with a craft basis to their work.

The Worshipful Company of Turners of London is a Livery Company and runs a charitable trust to promote the art and craft of turning. It does this in a number of ways; by supporting the Register of Professional Turners, holding biennial Turning Competitions and awarding bursaries, grants and prizes to promising turners. The Turners’ Company also holds exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations to promote and preserve the craft. The next major exhibition will be Wizardry in Wood in 2012.
